Here are some stat card samples (for the Imperium faction). The design retains much from Fleets at War! with a few minor changes
For the Fighter Wing rulebook, I’m including some descriptions of different fighter/bomber formations. Here are a few examples:
Here are a few counter WIPs for Fighter Wing (each 1”). These are from 3 of the factions included in the game, namely, the Imperium, K’thonians, and the Pirate Clans.
Here’s the preliminary cover for Fighter Wing. Since I’m including asteroids in the game, I thought I’d include them on the cover art too…
As an optional rule for Fighter Wing, I’d like to include Pilot Skill as an additional variable to each game. These will be markers placed above the stat card for each ship with values of Rookie, Veteran, and Ace. A Rookie pilot would give a -1 modifier to weapon accuracy and ship agility, while an Ace would give a +1 modifier.
Got the cards for Heroes of the Imperium yesterday. Very happy with how they look although I had no clue just how many 275 cards really was. The whole stack is 3.5 inches tall!
So the fighter combat game (based on Fleets at War!) is currently called Fighter Wing. It’s actually harking back to when I originally developed the IMP system (although I didn’t call it that at the time). I created it for an air-to-air combat game I made in high school (circa 1985) although I didn’t use the concepts again until I wrote F@W! in 2012.
Anyway, I’m incorporating some of my memories of the air-to-air game into the fighter combat (albeit in space) that I’m doing now, especially how I handle some of the combat maneuvers.
I have a third option, but it would take a lot longer than the other two ideas. This would be a card game tentatively called The Five Families. Each player (2-5) would play one of the five primary families of the Imperium with the goal of becoming emperor.
The good part is that it would only use cards so I could sell those via DriveThruCards and there wouldn’t be all the pieces/components like in my other games. On the other hand, all the artwork would take a while to do and it would take quite a while to play test something like that.
It’s just another option out there… :-)
Now that my work on Heroes of the Imperium is winding down, I wanted to mention what I have on my radar next:
I’d like to work on the first expansion for HotI, which will include two new heroes (the Brawler and Gunslinger) and a new faction (Necronea). The expansion will include a new set of dungeon tiles and some additional weapons/items. I have much of this already done since I had originally planned to include them with the main rules.
The other project I have in mind will return me to the Fleets at War! game, but more of a “spin-off” than an actual expansion. Basically I’d like to focus on fighter-level combat using the various fighters and smaller craft (Frigates or less) featured in the original F@W! and Claws of Chaos. This game will be somewhat akin to the Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Trek: Attack Wing titles, although with my own spin as usual.
I’ll try and work on both of these simultaneously. It took me the better part of a year working on HotI and I really don’t want to wait that long to publish my next project.
